Chapter 11 — Checking Agricultural Tractors and Implements for Personal Safety of the Operator

Objectives

Youth will:

  • be informed on the safety standards related to agricultural tractors and implements.
  • be able to explain the function of various equipment safety features and the injuries they prevent.

Resource Materials

Safe Operation of Agricultural Equipment, student manual

Activity Ideas

  1. Review the information in Chapter 11. Discuss some safety standards in design and the use of that safety feature in prevention of injuries. For example, it is known that ROPS and a seatbelt can save a tractor operator in a tractor overturn situation. However, wearing a seatbelt on a tractor is not common for tractor operators. What will it take to make wearing a seatbelt a common practice when operating a tractor with a ROPS?
  2. Visit an implement dealership and examine various safety features on new equipment. Discuss their function and the importance of not bypassing or removing these features, and also repairing them if they break.
  3. Using an older machine, show what could be done to bring it up to newer standards (adding shields, ROPS, flashing lights, on older tractors, etc.)
