Chapter 10 — Farmstead Safety


Objectives

Youth will:

  • increase their understanding of farm hazards that can cause injury or illness to farm workers.
  • improve their knowledge of the use of personal protective equipment.

(Note: This chapter includes the 4 hour requirement for general farm safety. A variety of topics may be addressed as determined by individual programs. Some possible topics include: animal handling safety, farmstead equipment safety, ATV safety as related to farm use, pesticide safety as related to worker protection; first aid; fire safety, electrical safety, grain bin safety, silo safety, manure storage safety, etc.

Activity Ideas

  1. Take a field trip to the farm and conduct a farm hazard inspection using the Farm Hazard Inspection Checklist.
  2. Invite a veterinarian to discuss safe animal handling procedures.
  3. Invite a representative from the local electrical utility to explain electrical safety. (If available, also ask them to do a high voltage powerline demonstration.)
  4. Invite a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) ATV instructor to discuss ATV safety as related to farm use.
  5. Provide training in first-aid or how to respond in case of a farm accident. Local Emergency Medical Technicians or American Red Cross personnel can provide training.
  6. Explain the different classes of fires and the type of fire extinguishers to use with each. (Refer to (page 46 in student manual). Demonstrate the use of a fire extinguisher. Some local fire departments provide assistance and use of extinguishers.
  7. Bring in a variety of personal protective equipment and demonstrate its use.
  8. Discuss silo gas and manure gas.
  9. Use a toy gravity wagon to demonstrate how individuals can suffocate in flowing grain. Discuss causes of suffocation in grain bins.
