Video Resources

"Starting and Stopping Tractors", Agricultural Operators Safety Series,Iowa State University Extension Service
"Bypass Starting, The Deadly Shortcut", John Deere Consolidated Safety Video, Deere and Co.

Activity Ideas

  1. Demonstrate correct starting procedures to the group. Repeat procedures but include some incorrect items for the group to discuss consequences of that improper action.
  2. Demonstrate the dangers of bypass starting. Some dealerships have a bypass starting kit for conducting this demonstration.
  3. Demonstrate the proper stopping procedures to the group. Repeat procedures but include some incorrect items for the group to discuss the consequences of that improper action.
  4. Discuss the "danger zone" around a tractor or piece of machinery. Create scenarios within the danger zone, such as what could happen if you started a tractor up and your little brother was nearby, or you left the loader up after you shut the tractor off and the little brother crawled under it, or you forgot to check neutral and started the tractor.
  5. Have youth practice safe starting and stopping procedures as part of their practice driving exercises.
