- Show the recommended video option. This video relates operating a tractor to being an
airplane pilot.
- Discuss the main controls on tractors and their functions. These should include:
- key switch
- clutch pedal
- fuel shut-off
- transmission
- pto clutch control
- hydraulic outlet controls
- brakes and pedal lock
- light switch and turn signals
- parking brake
- 3 pt hitch control
- other controls identified by instructor
- Identify key gages/lights and their functions
- engine oil pressure
- water temperature
- fuel level
- ammeter
- tachometer or engine speed indicator
- speedometer
- other gages/lights identified by instructor
- Using flashcards or overheads, have youth identify universal symbols and their meaning.
Symbols to include are water temperature, neutral, park, speed range, lights, fuel,
caution, fasten seat belt, power take-off, transmission and other symbols selected by the
instructor.
- On demonstration tractor have a number of gauges, instruments, or controls numbered and
have the youth identify the parts and their function.
- Demonstrate the motion or method of operation of controls on the tractor to small
groups. The tractor should be shut off.
- Demonstrate the proper seat adjustment. Show how the operator needs to sit on
operators's seat, seatbelt fastened, feet touching platform/foot rest and be able to reach
all controls. Check the youth's ability to reach and fully depress clutch and brake
pedals.
