Wisconsin Safe  Operation of Tractor and Machinery Certification Program

Direct Contact Hours

Certification programs are required to provide both tractor and machinery operation instruction equivalent to the federal regulations. Based on the federal requirements the course will be 24-hours in length. The 24- hours need to be direct contact hours with the youth. Direct contact may include classroom instruction, hands-on driving experience, or laboratory time. Hours doing home-work may not be included in the direct contact hours. An example course syllabus is on the next page.

Curriculum

The curriculum for this certification program uses the student manual Safe Operation of Agricultural Equipment by Silleto and Hull.

This manual has been written for use by the Cooperative Extension Service and Vocational Agriculture Departments to meet the safety training prescribed under Subpart E-1 of Part 1500 of Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations declaring certain occupations in agriculture to be particularly hazardous for the employment of children below the age of 16. This manual represents the 24-hour tractor and machine operation program as described under paragraph 1500.72 (b) (3). This subject matter is a reorganization and modernization of the 4-H Tractor Program First-Year Manual Units 1, 4, 5, 6, and 7; Second-Year Manual Unit 1; Third-Year Manual Units 1 and 2; and Fourth-Year Manual Unit 1.
