Certification Programs for Exemption through Agricultural Education Programs

Tractor Certification Exemption for Agricultural Education Students

  1. Youth must be 14 years of age, or older;
    (Note: a student may be under the age of 14 when qualifying for the certificate but the certificate cannot be issued until the student is 14 years old or older.)
  2. Be familiar with the general hazards associated with agricultural work;
  3. Have completed the 15 hour certification program; including units 1-7 from Safe Operation of Agricultural Equipment Manual;
  4. Passed a written examination on tractor safety; and
  5. Demonstrate a course similar to the 4-H or FFA tractor operator's contest course.

Tractor and Machinery Operation Exemption for Agricultural Education Students

  1. The youth must have satisfied all of the requirements for the Tractor Operation Certificate; and
  2. The youth must have completed an additional 10-hour certification program (25 hours total) on farm machinery safety, including units 8, 9, 10 and 11 of the Safe Operation of Agricultural Equipment Manual.

Exemption through Agricultural Education Programs

Agricultural Education Student Learners Program ExemptionIf an agricultural education department chooses to meet certain requirements, they can qualify to offer the student learner option exemption. This allows any agricultural education student to work in any of the first six hazardous work activities listed on page 2 and 3. For qualification requirements, refer to U.S. Department of Labor, Employment Standards Administration, Wage and Hour Division, Child Labor Bulletin No. 102.
